We are always looking for bright and hard working students. Interested candidates can also inquire for open research positions.
If you share our research interests, don't hesitate to send us an email with your CV and transcripts. At KAUST you will enjoy the assistance of highly qualified and experienced faculty and superb facilities and resources.

Postdoc positions are open to work on the theory and applications of data assimilation, Bayesian inversion and filtering, and uncertainty quantification. Benefits include tax-free salaries starting at 55K USD, free fully-furnished housing, health (medical and dental) care and free international schools. To apply, please send a CV and a letter of interest with the names and contacts of at least two references to
ibrahim.hoteit@kaust.edu.sa

We also have the following 3 open Postdoc positions:

Postdoc Position I:

Applications are sought for a postdoctoral position in ocean modeling and physical oceanography.
The successful applicant will join a newly research group at KAUST working on modeling and studying the Red Sea, and developing data assimilation systems for analyzing and predicting its circulation. The project is in collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI). The postdoc is expected to visit WHOI for several weeks per year. The primary responsibilities is to study the Red Sea circulation and will involve running the MITgcm model that has been developed for the Red Sea and analyze its outputs.
Qualified applicants should possess a Ph.D. in physical oceanography and have experience with ocean models. Familiarity with scientific programming in Fortran, and other languages like Matlab and/or Ferret is a must. Candidates with good publishing record will be given preference.
The compensation package includes a competitive tax-free salary; fully furnished housing; health care (medical and dental). To apply, please
send a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest with the names and contact information of at least two references to Dr. Ibrahim Hoteit, ibrahim.hoteit@kaust.edu.sa

Postdoc Position II:

Applications are sought for a 3-year (renewable every year) postdoctoral position in reservoir history matching as part of a joint research project between Prof. Mary Wheeler at the Center for Subsurface Modeling at the University of Texas at Austin (UT) and Prof. Ibrahim Hoteit at the Applied Math and Computational Science program at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). The postdoc will spend 50% of her/his time at UT and 50% at KAUST.

The postdoc will work with already established teams in reservoir modeling and assimilation on developing and implementing new ensemble-based filtering methodologies for petroleum reservoir characterization and management of uncertainties. In particular, we are interested in the following problems

  • Integration of time-lapse seismic and production data into reservoir models.
  • Handling of non-Gaussianity of the assimilation problems, in particular history matching of multipoint statistical facies.
  • Parameter estimation of relative permeability curves together with grid block porosities and absolute permeabilities.
  • Development of algorithms for parameterization of unknown space into reduced space for better handling of the issues with ensemble based algorithms (non-linearity and non-Gaussianity).

Qualified applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Computational sciences, or a closely related field. We are looking for candidates with experience in reservoir modeling and/or ensemble Kalman filtering. Familiarity with scientific programming in Fortran and Matlab, high performance computing, and with good publishing record will be given preference.
The compensation package includes a competitive salary; fully furnished housing at KAUST; health care (medical and dental); and 4 weeks annual vacation. Travel expenses between KAUST and UT will be also covered.
Review of applications will begin as soon as possible and applications will be accepted and reviewed until the position is filled. To apply, please send a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest with the names and contact information of at least two references to Dr. Ibrahim Hoteit, ibrahim.hoteit@kaust.edu.sa

Postdoc Position III:

Applications are sought for a 2-year postdoctoral position (with possible extension) to work on large scale nonlinear Bayesian filtering problems, with focus on reservoir history matching applications. The position is part of a joint research project between Prof. Ibrahim Hoteit at the Applied Math and Computational Science program at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and Drs Chris Farmer and Irene Moroz at the Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM) at the University of Oxford. The postdoc is expected to spend about 75% of her/his time at KAUST and 25% at OCCAM, but this can be flexible.

The postdoc will work with already established teams in reservoir modeling and assimilation on proposing and implementing new nonlinear Bayesian filtering methodologies for petroleum reservoir characterization and management of uncertainties.

Qualified applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Computational sciences, or a closely related field. We are looking for candidates with experience in reservoir modeling and/or ensemble and nonlinear Kalman filtering. Familiarity with scientific programming in Fortran and Matlab, high performance computing, and with good publishing record will be given preference.
The compensation package includes a competitive salary; housing at KAUST and Oxford; health care (medical and dental); and 4 weeks annual vacation. Travel expenses between KAUST and Oxford will be also covered.
To apply, please send a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest with the names and contact information of at least two references to Dr. Ibrahim Hoteit, ibrahim.hoteit@kaust.edu.sa
